FIRST EVER ASIAN MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS (M&A) CONFERENCE

According to a recent report by Thomson Financial, M&A activities in Asia ex-Japan alone showed a 56.4% upsurge from US$127.5 billion in transactions for the first six months of 2006 to US$199.4 billiion for 2007. The number of announced deals totaled 3,662 which has been rising steadily over the past few years. High volumes were experienced across major sectors, with Telecommunication emerging as the favourite followed by Financial, while Energy & Power was third with a 12.6% market share comprising of US$25 billion worth of transactions.

Private equity has played a significant role in fuelling the recent M&A boom globally and their involvement is likely to increase further with the recent successful raising of the US$21.7 billion Blackstone private equity fund as a case in point. In Asia Pacific, the 2007 country league tables showed that 3 countries stood out among the rest with Australia leading the pack with US$76 billion of transactions closed, followed closely by China and India.
